As of this past April, the 1926 Irish Census is now available online through the National Archives of Ireland. According to the National Archives website, the Census of 1926 holds a unique place in Irish history since this was the first census conducted after the establishment of the Irish Free State.

The National Archives website describes the census as "The Story of Us!" According to 1926 Irish Census, a population of over two million (2,971,992) were record which was a decrease of 5.3% from the 1911 Census. The Census also indicated that 18.3% of the population spoke Irish at the time and 92.6% of the population were Catholic. The original census was stored in 1,299 boxes, containing over 700,000.

The 1926 Irish Census is free to access the census on the National Archives website, with no need to register for an account or to sign up to any terms and conditions. You can also view the 1901 and the 1911 Irish Census in its entirety.

The National Archives in Dublin is also hosting "The Census 1926 Exhibition Tour." A number of cities in Ireland will be hosting the event including Dublin Castle in the city of Dublin. The exhibit st Dublin Castle's Coach House will continue until August of next year. No booking is required and admission is free. It is a self guided tour.

An exhibit is also being held from 13 May until 9 September in the U.S. The exhibit will be at Boston College in Boston, Massachusetts. Again, the exhibit is free to visit and no need to book for reservations.

The 1926 Census contains names, birthplaces, occupations and religion as well many other items regarding you ancestors. Even if your ancestor wasn't in Ireland at the time, a relative of your ancestor may have been there and enumerated in the 1926 Census. This could give you more background regarding your ancestors!
